Mark Landvik - Professional Backcountry Rider

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."      - John Quincy Adams.

"Do what you love. Know you own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw it still."  If you didn't know better, you would think this quote was pulled directly from a conversation with Mark Landvik, but in fact it comes from Henry David Thoreau, a poet and philosopher born in 1817. It's a funny thing that a 150-year-old quip could be modern and edgy enough to perfectly illustrate the attitude and passion of one of the biggest stars from the world of professional snowboarding. But it is.

For the past decade Mark Landvik has built his life around the extreme sport of professional backcountry snowboarding. Growing up in Juneau, Alaska his passion, drive and skill was born on the 36 snowboard runs at Eaglecrest. After a move to Bellingham, WA, it was our very own Mt. Baker that took the brunt of Mark's relentless riding. It was through these years that the spotlight turned to this sport, resulting in what we know today as a culture of its own, one of unparalleled athletic ability, innovative products, and a following of fans from every walk of life.  Mark Landvik has certainly been an instrumental player in this phenomenon by traveling the world, honing his skill, in search of the perfect ride.

Mark is a featured rider in the 2011 film The Art of Flight, which was produced in conjunction with ESPN, Quiksilver, Red Bull, and Brain Farm. This epic combination of cinematography and extreme snowboarding portrayed in a documentary format features a few of the world's top professional snowboarders as they travel around the world with a determination to shoot the perfect sequence – not an easy task when you're being dropped by helicopter on to some of the world's tallest peaks where no man has ever ventured, and it's unclear whether you will make it out alive – no joke. To try and describe it is futile; you must see the film to believe it. The Art of Flight debuted in early September 2011 and quickly became the number one movie on iTunes. Taking two years to create, it's a must-see for any sport enthusiast or person who understands and respects the art of perseverance.

It's an undisputed fact that snowboarders often possess an artistic eye, something that's needed in order to visualize a line in the mountain, a path in the snow that doesn't yet exist until they hit it with their board. Many use their snowboards as canvases for painting, others design and develop clothing lines, some are writers, producers and videographers. Mark is a craftsman. He uses wood to create furniture that will certainly become family heirlooms and treasured pieces.  While taking a hiatus in 2010 to heal a knee injury incurred while filming Art of Flight, Mark rested his body and mind by delving deeper into his personal hobby of woodworking.

But don't think for a minute that this pioneer was ready to stay in the wood shop!  His newest endeavor, Red Bull Supernatural, brings 18 of the world's best backcountry snowboarders together for a one-day competition intended to determine the best all-around snowboarder in the world.  Red Bull Supernatural will air Saturday, March 31st on NBC at 10am PST.

An introspective person with a wickedly keen sense of humor, Mark Landvik is a role model for kids, teens and anyone with an uncompromising determination to create a life around doing what they love.

Multop Financial is proud to have been serving Mark Landvik with tax, business accounting and wealth management assistance for the past five years.

Multop Financial Team Focus

Ted Newman

Never ever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has.         -Margaret Mead

Jeff Gordon at NASCAR Dale Earnhardt once said, “The winner ain’t the one with the fastest car; it’s the one who refuses to lose.”    This is a perfect example of why Ted Newman is such a big NASCAR fan.  Determination and drive, and some fun along the way!  Just like the famous drivers on the track, Ted is the kind of guy who likes to set goals, and work with his pit crew to get the results he wants.   His annual trip to Daytona 500 keeps him motivated, not only as a NASCAR enthusiast, but as a key member of the advisory team here at Multop Financial.

Ted Newman Financial Advisor In 1995 Ted began his career in financial services with a position at MetLife where he specialized in life, auto and home insurance.  He soon obtained his securities registrations and took a position at InterWest Bank where he began working with a full array of investments, specifically 401(k) plans.  Most recently he served as an advisor at Frontier Bank.  For the past 20 years Ted has been building long term relationships with individuals and business owners and now makes Multop Financial his home where we are pleased to have him lead our business retirement services department.   Ted explains, “When it was time to leave Frontier, I looked for an affiliation with an independent firm that shared my same work values and investment philosophies.  Multop’s concepts on multi-asset portfolios and their team approach to investing was exactly what I was looking for.”

Ted and Susan Newman Along with being a NASCAR fan (Jeff Gordon is his favorite driver), Ted enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, including golf, water-skiing and his favorite work-out, running.   Ted’s assistant, Brandon Beck, comments, “When Ted’s not watching laps, he’s running them.”  Another favorite past time is relaxing at home with his wife, Susan (many of you may recognize her as a familiar face at Macy’s where she serves as the manager of the Dior cosmetics counter).  In the summer time, you will likely find Ted out on Samish Island trapping crab for his “world-famous crab dip.”

Ted’s World-Famous Crab Dip

1 lb. cooked crab meat
1 cup mayonnaise
Cocktail sauce
Hot sauce or salsa, to taste
Chopped olives (optional)
Chopped artichoke hearts (optional)
Assorted crackers

In a bowl, combine crab meat and mayonnaise until just saturated.  Add cocktail sauce and mix together until the mixture has a light orange tint.  Add chopped olives, artichoke hearts, and your favorite hot sauce or salsa.  Mix together until combined.  Spread on crackers and enjoy!
