Jalapeños Mexican Restaurant

Deliciosa comida y un excelente servicio –
Delicious food and great service!

Jesse Cantu owner of Jalapeños Mexican Restaurant. You can’t live in Bellingham for too long without noticing the brightly painted Jalapeños Mexican Restaurant on Holly Street by the waterfront.  Home of the “Big Mama” margarita and friendly, family service, Jalapeños is the result of Jesse Cantu’s 30 years of hard work and dedication.  Fairhaven residents and visitors can enjoy Jesse’s second location, Milagro Mexican Grill and now with the recent opening of the third location, Mexican food enthusiasts can visit the new Jalapeños in the Barkley District.

Jesse says his inspiration came from the atmosphere of his hometown Jalapenos Barkely VillageMonterrey, Mexico.  After moving to the United States in 1976 he took a job as a dishwasher in Houston, then moved to Chicago and worked as a busboy and server, which is where he says he received most of his restaurant training.  While working for a major hotel chain in 1995, he was asked to move to the Bellingham area to manage their catering division.  Four years later he opened the first Jalapeños.

When asked about his biggest challenge, Jesse shares that it’s difficult to find the right cooks and chefs.  “I insist they cook the Jalapeños way, and it’s not easy to find!”  But he’s pleased with the staff he has now, and proud of their offerings of unique variations to coJalapenos restaurant Barkley Village, Bellingham Washingtonmmonly known dishes.  Jesse also shares his biggest reward, “The people!  I love seeing the smiles on customers’ faces when they leave happy.  There is great satisfaction in that.”  Jesse says his restaurants have also allowed him to meet many great friends.  On the walls of his restaurants he displays photos with notable people and celebrities.  But when asked about the most exciting person he has ever met, he quickly answers, “My wife, Alicia!  We’ve been married 25 years and going strong for another 25!”  Together they have four children; Claudia, Jose, Danny, and Jorge.

The first piece of advice Jesse would share with anyone thinking about the restaurant business is, “You’ve got to love it.  Unless you have passion you won’t succeed.”  And it’s obvious that Jesse has passion!  That’s what we call “viviendo el sueño americano” – living the American Dream!  Congratulations, Jesse.

Ted Newman

Never ever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has.         -Margaret Mead

Jeff Gordon at NASCAR Dale Earnhardt once said, “The winner ain’t the one with the fastest car; it’s the one who refuses to lose.”    This is a perfect example of why Ted Newman is such a big NASCAR fan.  Determination and drive, and some fun along the way!  Just like the famous drivers on the track, Ted is the kind of guy who likes to set goals, and work with his pit crew to get the results he wants.   His annual trip to Daytona 500 keeps him motivated, not only as a NASCAR enthusiast, but as a key member of the advisory team here at Multop Financial.

Ted Newman financial advisor In 1995 Ted began his career in financial services with a position at MetLife where he specialized in life, auto and home insurance.  He soon earned his financial advisor licenses and took a position at InterWest Bank where he began working with a full array of investments, specifically 401(k) plans.  Most recently he served as an advisor at Frontier Bank.  For the past 20 years Ted has been building long term relationships with individuals and business owners and now makes Multop Financial his home where we are pleased to have him lead our business retirement services department.   Ted explains, “When it was time to leave Frontier, I looked for an affiliation with an independent firm that shared my same work values and investment philosophies.  Multop’s concepts on multi-asset portfolios and their team approach to investing was exactly what I was looking for.”

Ted and Susan Newman Along with being a NASCAR fan (Jeff Gordon is his favorite driver), Ted enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, including golf, water-skiing and his favorite work-out, running.   Ted’s assistant, Brandon Beck, comments, “When Ted’s not watching laps, he’s running them.”  Another favorite past time is relaxing at home with his wife, Susan (many of you may recognize her as a familiar face at Macy’s where she serves as the manager of the Dior cosmetics counter).  In the summer time, you will likely find Ted out on Samish Island trapping crab for his “world-famous crab dip.”
